What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine how word order, phrases, clauses, and sentence patterns affect meaning. They combine, shorten, and rearrange ideas to make writing clearer and more effective.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students combine related ideas without creating run-ons or changing meaning. They can rearrange or shorten a sentence and explain how the revision improves clarity or emphasis.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think longer sentences always sound better. They may create comma splices, remove key details, or change the original meaning when combining ideas.
How to Assess It
- Give students three choppy sentences: “The storm arrived. It flooded the road. School closed early.” Ask them to combine the ideas clearly in one sentence.
