What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students determine whether the subject performs an action or receives it. They rewrite passive constructions in active voice and keep voice consistent across a passage.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly identify who performs the action and who receives it. They revise passive sentences into clear active sentences while preserving the original meaning and verb tense.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may label every sentence with a form of “be” as passive. They may remove the “by” phrase but leave the sentence passive, or change the original tense while revising.
How to Assess It
- Give students four sentences to label as active or passive. Ask them to rewrite two passive sentences in active voice without changing the meaning or tense.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips with subjects, verbs, and objects, then have them build and revise active and passive versions.
Ask students to explain which voice better fits a news headline and support their choice with evidence from the wording.
Play a relay where teams label sentence cards by voice, then earn a point by accurately revising each passive sentence.
Have students edit a school announcement, changing unnecessary passive sentences to active voice while keeping names, dates, and facts accurate.
