What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose active or passive voice to match a text’s purpose, audience, and subject area. They keep that choice steady unless a shift adds meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can write a paragraph in a voice suited to its purpose, such as passive voice for a formal procedure. They can spot and fix distracting shifts.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think passive voice is always wrong or that any form of “be” makes a sentence passive. They may also shift voice accidentally when moving between sentences.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short paragraph that shifts voice twice. Ask them to revise it for a lab report and explain one choice.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips from a mixed-voice paragraph, then have them arrange and revise the sentences into one consistent voice.
Ask students which voice better suits a news report, lab report, or campaign speech, and have them defend each choice.
Play Voice Switch: teams rewrite active sentences as passive, then identify which version fits a stated audience and purpose.
Compare instructions, news articles, and scientific reports, marking who performs each action and where the actor is omitted.
