What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose active or passive voice to match a text’s purpose, readers, and field. They maintain that choice across a passage and shift only for a clear reason.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students keep voice consistent unless a purposeful shift improves meaning. They select active voice for directness and passive voice when the action or result deserves emphasis.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think passive voice is always wrong or that active voice fits every context. They may also shift voice without noticing, creating unclear actors or uneven emphasis.

How to Assess It

Give students a mixed-voice paragraph and ask them to revise it for a lab report or opinion column. Require one sentence explaining their choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence strips from a mixed-voice paragraph, then have them revise and arrange the sentences for a clear, consistent purpose.

  2. Ask students which voice better fits a news report, lab report, or campaign speech, and have them defend one choice with evidence.

  3. Play Voice Switch: teams rewrite active sentences as passive and passive sentences as active while keeping the original meaning.

  4. Compare instructions, scientific reports, and opinion columns, then mark where each writer emphasizes the actor, action, or result.
