What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students create a message for a clear goal and a named audience. They combine modes such as writing, images, layout, speech, or audio and make choices that suit the viewers or listeners.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students select words, images, layout, and audio that fit the intended audience and goal. They can explain how each chosen element helps inform, persuade, or entertain that audience.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add images or sounds that do not support the message. They may use the same tone and details for every audience. They may focus on visual appeal while leaving out needed information.
How to Assess It
- Give students a school event and two possible audiences, sixth graders and families. Ask them to choose one audience and sketch a three-part message using words and visuals, then explain two choices.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups paper, markers, and event details to create separate posters for students and parents, then compare their design choices.
Ask students to explain how they would change a recycling message for kindergarteners, classmates, and the school board.
Play Audience Match by having teams pair sample slides, flyers, and video scripts with audience cards and defend each match.
Create a digital announcement for an upcoming school event using a headline, image, key details, and a clear call to action.
