What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students review the assigned material and complete any role or task before meeting with the group. They bring notes, evidence, questions, and needed materials so they can contribute right away.

What Mastery Looks Like

A prepared student brings annotated materials, completed role work, relevant evidence, and a useful question. The student refers to these materials and contributes without needing extra preparation time.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think showing up with the text is enough. They may complete their assigned role but bring no notes, evidence, or questions to share.

How to Assess It

Before group work, collect a preparation slip with one key point, one piece of text evidence, and one question. Check whether students use it during discussion.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have students assemble a discussion kit with an annotated text, two evidence cards, a question card, and their completed role sheet.

  2. Ask students to write: What preparation helps a group finish strong, and what happens when one member arrives unprepared?

  3. Play Ready or Not by having teams sort sample preparation cards into useful, incomplete, or unrelated piles and explain each choice.

  4. Give groups a mock workplace meeting agenda and ask each student to prepare one update, one question, and one needed document.
