What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students review the assigned material and gather what they need before meeting with a group. They bring notes, questions, and ideas that help the group begin work right away.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students arrive with needed materials, useful notes, and a clear understanding of the task. They use their preparation to share ideas, ask questions, and complete their role.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think bringing supplies counts as preparation, even if they have not read or made notes. Some stay silent, dominate the talk, or forget their assigned role.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short text and ask them to prepare one idea, one supporting detail, and one question for a five-minute group meeting. Collect their notes and listen for each item.

Ways to Teach It
Give each student a folder with a short article, sticky notes, and a role card, then have them prepare before a timed meeting.
Ask students to write, "What will I bring, say, and ask?" before discussing a shared text in groups.
Play Ready or Not: teams inspect sample meeting bags and notes, then score which students are prepared and explain why.
Plan a class event committee meeting, with students bringing one idea, one question, and the information needed for their assigned job.
