What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students bring the assigned book, notes, or materials and know what the group is working on. They listen, share one relevant idea, and complete an agreed role.

What Mastery Looks Like

Before a group task, a student can explain the goal and gather needed materials without repeated reminders. During the task, the student contributes, responds to classmates, and follows the group’s plan.

Common Misconceptions

Some students think being ready only means sitting with the group. Others bring materials but wait silently, interrupt classmates, or talk about unrelated ideas.

How to Assess It

Before a four-minute partner task, ask students to bring a picture book and one sticky-note idea about the main character. Check whether each student brings both, shares the idea, and responds to a partner.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place task cards and materials at stations; partners use a picture checklist to gather supplies, choose roles, and build a paper bridge.

  2. Before a read-aloud discussion, students draw one idea they want to share, then explain why it will help the group.

  3. Play “Ready, Set, Meet”: students study a task card, collect two named materials, and earn points for contributing on topic.

  4. Hold a classroom clean-up meeting; each student brings a job card, names one needed tool, and helps the team assign tasks.
