What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students prepare before group work by reading assigned material, taking notes, and bringing needed materials. They come ready with ideas, evidence, and questions that help the group make progress.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students arrive with the assigned text, useful notes, and clear ideas or questions. They refer to their preparation while speaking, listening, and completing the group task.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think showing up with materials counts as preparation. Others may read the text but arrive without notes, questions, or ideas to contribute.
How to Assess It
- Before a small-group discussion, collect a preparation slip with one claim, one cited detail, and one question. Check each student’s contributions during discussion.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups an annotated article, role cards, and chart paper, then have each student bring two notes to a planning meeting.
Ask students to write: What can you prepare before a discussion so your group can use your ideas?
Play Discussion Ready, where teams earn points for arriving with a claim, evidence, question, and needed materials.
Have students prepare an agenda and notes for a mock workplace meeting about planning a school event.
