What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine how writers and creators use words, structure, visuals, sound, and layout to guide a reader's response. They create different kinds of texts and explain why their choices fit the goal and audience.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can compare two versions of a message and explain how their features create different effects. They can produce a text whose words, structure, visuals, and format clearly fit its goal and readers.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat font, images, layout, dialogue, and word choice as decoration rather than meaning-making choices. They may name a feature without explaining how it affects the reader or why it fits the intended audience.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short paragraph and ask them to redesign it as a warning poster for younger students. Have them label two choices and explain each choice's effect.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups one news event and paper, markers, and images to create both a front-page report and a social media post.
Ask students to compare a poem and comic about the same topic, then explain which features shape each text's mood.
Play Feature Match by having teams pair text features with audience cards and defend each match in one sentence.
Examine a restaurant menu, public service poster, or product page, then identify three design choices that guide customer decisions.
