What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students separate a word's dictionary definition from the feelings and ideas it suggests. They explain how word choice shapes tone and meaning, then choose precise words for their own purpose.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students explain both the literal meaning and the associations a word carries in context. They select or revise words to create a specific tone, such as respectful, humorous, or critical.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat synonyms as interchangeable because their dictionary definitions are similar. They may also label connotations as positive or negative without using context or explaining the effect on tone.
How to Assess It
- Give students the words "confident," "proud," and "arrogant." Ask them to rank the words by connotation, explain each choice, and use one in a sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Place synonym cards such as slim, thin, and scrawny on a positive-to-negative continuum, then have students defend their placements.
Ask students how replacing "walked" with "stomped" changes a character, then write two sentences that create different impressions.
Play Connotation Match by pairing neutral words with positive and negative alternatives, earning points for accurate explanations.
Compare words in two advertisements for similar products, then identify how each company uses connotation to shape the audience's response.
