What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare words with similar dictionary meanings and notice differences in feeling, strength, and tone. They choose precise words that fit the context and purpose.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can rank related words by strength or feeling and support their ranking with context. They can revise a sentence with a more precise word and explain the effect.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat synonyms as interchangeable because their dictionary meanings are similar. They may confuse connotation with denotation or label every unfamiliar word as negative.
How to Assess It
- Give students the words persistent, stubborn, and determined. Ask them to choose one for a recommendation letter and explain how its connotation supports the purpose.

Ways to Teach It
Have students sort word cards such as slim, thin, skinny, and scrawny from positive to negative, then compare their choices.
Ask students to explain how replacing walked with marched, wandered, or crept changes a character’s mood or purpose.
Play a synonym challenge where teams choose the best word for a sentence and earn a point only after explaining the nuance.
Compare word choices in two product advertisements, then rewrite one slogan to appeal to a different audience.
