What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students connect what they already know to new information in a text. They compare ideas, notice conflicts or gaps, and update their understanding using evidence.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can explain what they believed before reading and what the text added or changed. When ideas conflict, they use evidence to revise their thinking or name a question that remains.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume that prior knowledge is always accurate or that any personal connection helps comprehension. They may ignore conflicting details, reject unfamiliar information, or use experience instead of text evidence.

How to Assess It

Give students a short passage explaining that bats can see. Ask them to complete: “I thought,” “The text says,” and “Now I think,” then cite one supporting sentence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups index cards labeled Knew, New, Conflict, and Question to sort while reading a short science passage.

  2. Discuss: What did you believe before reading, and which sentence confirmed, changed, or added to your thinking?

  3. In pairs, match claim cards to passage evidence, then label each match Confirm, Change, or Question.

  4. Read a nutrition label and a short health article, then compare prior assumptions with the facts and write one updated conclusion.
