What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students connect what they already know to ideas and details in a text. They compare the two, correct mistaken ideas, identify missing information, and add new learning.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students explain how a text confirms, changes, or adds to what they already know. They point to specific details and identify questions that remain unanswered.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat prior knowledge as automatically correct, even when the text gives different information. They may list what they know without connecting it to evidence or noticing gaps.

How to Assess It

Give students a short paragraph about an unexpected animal adaptation. Ask them to name one prior idea, one new fact, and one revision, each with text evidence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs fact cards and a short article. Students sort each card into confirmed, corrected, or unanswered, then cite supporting lines.

  2. Ask students to write: What did you think before reading, what changed, and which sentence caused the change?

  3. Play Knowledge Match: teams pair prior-knowledge statements with text evidence, earning a point only when they explain the connection.

  4. Read a weather advisory and compare it with students' weather knowledge, then list one corrected idea and one new safety action.
