What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect what they already know to a text, then compare those ideas with the text’s claims and evidence. They notice conflicts or missing information, revise mistaken assumptions, and add new learning to their understanding.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name a relevant prior belief, cite a passage that confirms, extends, or challenges it, and explain the relationship. The student resolves a conflict by revising the belief or identifying a question that needs another source.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat any personal connection as useful, even when it does not help explain the text. They may ignore contradictions, assume prior knowledge is correct, or copy new facts without showing how their understanding changed.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short article and ask: “What did you think before reading, what line changed or extended that thinking, and what do you think now?” Require one quotation and one remaining question.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups claim cards and text evidence strips, then have them sort each pair as confirms, extends, challenges, or leaves a gap.
After reading, students write an “I thought, the text shows, now I think” response and discuss which evidence changed their thinking.
Play Revision Relay: teams read short passages, identify a challenged assumption, and race to write the strongest evidence-based revision.
Compare a familiar social media claim with a reliable news report, then list what was confirmed, corrected, and still unanswered.
