What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students connect what they already know or have experienced to ideas in a text. They compare their thinking with text details, revise ideas, add information, and name unanswered questions.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students explain how a text confirmed, changed, or added to what they knew. They notice a missing answer or conflicting idea and state a question or correction.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat every personal experience as a fact or make connections that do not relate to the reading. They may think changing an earlier idea means they failed, rather than learned something new.

How to Assess It

After a short nonfiction read, give an exit ticket with three boxes: “I thought,” “The text says,” and “Now I think.” Require one text detail.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Before reading an animal book, students write known facts on sticky notes, then sort them into confirmed, changed, or new after reading.

  2. Ask, “What did you think before reading, and which words or pictures changed your thinking?” Have students answer with a partner.

  3. Play Match or Change by reading fact cards aloud while students hold up “matches,” “changes,” or “new” response cards.

  4. Compare a week of class weather observations with a weather book, then add or correct one statement on the class chart.
