What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students activate relevant background knowledge before and during reading. They compare their existing ideas with the text, flag conflicts or missing information, and revise their understanding. They connect new evidence to concepts, examples, and sources they already know.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name a relevant prior belief, cite evidence that confirms, complicates, or contradicts it, and explain how their thinking changed. The student identifies what remains unclear and names a source or question that could fill the gap.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat memory, opinion, or personal experience as proof. Some notice only confirming details and ignore contradictions. Others make personal connections without explaining how those connections affect understanding.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “Name one belief you brought to the reading, cite one sentence that confirmed or challenged it, and explain your revised understanding.” Add one unanswered question.

Ways to Teach It
Students build a sticky-note concept map before reading, then move, replace, or add notes as the text changes their understanding.
Ask students to write: “What did you expect, what surprised you, and which passage caused you to revise your thinking?”
Give teams belief and evidence cards to sort into confirmed, challenged, or unresolved piles, then require a spoken justification for each choice.
Compare assumptions about local housing costs with a news article, then verify one conflict using census or county data.
