What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students combine Greek and Latin roots, root words, prefixes, and suffixes to make real words. They explain how the parts shape meaning and use each completed word correctly.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students form real words such as transport, importer, and portable from given parts. They explain each part’s meaning and use the completed word correctly in context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may attach any prefix or suffix to a root, even when the result is not a real word. They may treat the root as a complete word or overlook spelling changes, such as dropping the final e in usable.
How to Assess It
- Give students port, trans-, im-, -able, and -er. Ask them to build two real words, define each from its parts, and use one in a sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs word-part tiles labeled with roots, prefixes, and suffixes, then have them build and define six real words.
Ask students to explain in writing how the parts of preview, spectator, or portable help reveal each word’s meaning.
Play a timed word-building game where teams combine a displayed root with affix cards and earn points only for valid words.
Give students a grocery flyer and have them circle words with roots or affixes, then label each part and infer the meaning.
