What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose precise, grade-level words that make their meaning clear. They adjust vocabulary for class discussions, written work, presentations, and conversations while using subject terms correctly.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students replace vague words such as “thing,” “good,” and “went” with precise choices. They use academic and subject-specific terms accurately and adjust their wording for the audience and setting.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think longer words always make communication stronger. They may misuse technical terms, confuse everyday and subject-specific meanings, or use casual language in formal work.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: Rewrite “The thing made the water change” for a science report. Underline two precise words and explain one choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word cards from a science unit, then have them sort words into everyday, academic, and specialized groups and justify two choices.

  2. Ask students to rewrite one playground description as a principal email, class discussion comment, and personal text, then compare their word choices.

  3. Play Context Swap: teams draw an audience card and revise a vague sentence with precise words that fit that audience.

  4. Use a weather report, and have students create versions for a kindergartner and a science class using suitable vocabulary.
