What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose words that fit the topic, audience, and purpose when speaking and writing. They use exact words instead of relying on vague choices such as good, bad, thing, or stuff.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student uses words such as compare, habitat, and exhausted correctly in speech and writing. The student replaces vague words like nice, thing, or went with exact choices that suit the audience and task.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use an impressive word without knowing its exact meaning, or place a subject term in the wrong context. They may think precise vocabulary always means longer words and overlook differences between a report and a casual conversation.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: Rewrite “The fox got food in its place” for a science report, using habitat and a precise verb. Underline each changed word and explain why it fits.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word cards such as happy, compare, and ecosystem to sort, define, and use in accurate sentences.

  2. Ask students to rewrite “The storm was bad” for a friend, a weather report, and a science notebook, then discuss their choices.

  3. Play Vocabulary Charades: students draw a word, describe or act it out, and earn a point for using it accurately in a sentence.

  4. Provide a recipe, weather forecast, and sports article, then have students circle specialized words and explain who would use each one.
