What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students learn everyday words, school words such as compare and describe, and topic words from books and class units. They use these words when speaking, drawing, dictating, or writing for different purposes.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student selects a word that fits the topic and uses it in an understandable phrase or sentence. The student uses learned words during partner talk, class discussions, play, and shared writing.

Common Misconceptions

Students may repeat a new word without knowing what it means, or use a related but incorrect word. They may also rely on vague words like thing, stuff, or nice.

How to Assess It

Show a picture connected to a recent unit and provide three learned words. Ask, “Choose one word and use it to tell your partner about the picture.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up a veterinarian play station with toy animals, bandages, and word cards such as patient, examine, gentle, and healthy.

  2. After a read-aloud, ask, “Which new word best describes the character, and what happened that proves it?”

  3. Play Vocabulary Charades, where children act out learned verbs or adjectives while classmates name each word and use it in a sentence.

  4. Take a school walk and have children use beside, behind, above, and between to describe where they see objects.
