What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use general, academic, and subject-specific words to make speaking and writing clearer. They adjust word choice for different audiences, purposes, and settings.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose words that fit the topic, audience, and setting. They use precise terms correctly in speaking and writing, and can explain why a word improves the message.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use long or technical words even when they do not fit the audience or topic. They may also repeat vague words such as “good,” “thing,” or “nice” instead of choosing precise language.

How to Assess It

Give students the sentence, “The storm was bad.” Ask them to rewrite it for a science report using two precise academic or specialized words.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word cards to sort into everyday, academic, and specialized groups, then use one word from each group in a sentence.

  2. Ask students to revise “The animal moved” for a friend, a science report, and a nature documentary, then explain each word choice.

  3. Play Vocabulary Upgrade, where teams replace vague words in sentence cards with precise words that keep the original meaning.

  4. Have students write a weather alert using terms such as forecast, precipitation, temperature, and hazardous for a school audience.
