What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students notice unfamiliar or useful words in stories, articles, and content-area texts. They work out meanings, confirm them with reliable sources, and use the words in new contexts.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students explain an unfamiliar word using context and information from a glossary, dictionary, or class discussion. They use newly learned words accurately in speaking and writing.

Common Misconceptions

Students may copy a glossary definition without understanding how the word works in the text. They may also confuse familiar everyday meanings with specialized meanings, such as volume in math or science.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Choose one new academic or subject-specific word from today's text, define it in your own words, and use it accurately in a new sentence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word cards and text excerpts to sort into everyday, academic, and subject-specific groups, then explain each choice.

  2. Ask students to explain how one word from the text helps readers understand the topic more clearly.

  3. Play vocabulary charades using new words, with teammates giving the definition and an accurate sentence after each guess.

  4. Have students collect specialized words from menus, weather reports, sports statistics, or instructions, then explain where each word is used.
