What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students notice and collect new words from grade-level stories, articles, and content lessons. They work out meanings, discuss how words are used, and apply them accurately in speaking and writing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students collect useful words from stories, articles, and subject lessons. They explain the words in context and use them accurately when speaking and writing.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy a dictionary definition without connecting it to the word’s meaning in the text. They may confuse everyday words with academic or subject-specific terms, or use new words in the wrong context.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short science paragraph. Ask them to choose one academic word and one science term, explain each, and use both in original sentences.

Give pairs word cards from a current text to sort into everyday, academic, and subject-specific groups, then explain each choice.
Ask students to choose one new word from today’s reading and write how its meaning helps them understand the topic.
