What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students learn unfamiliar words and phrases while reading grade-level stories, articles, and subject-area texts. They determine meanings and use the words when discussing or writing about the topic.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students explain new words using clear, student-friendly language. They use general, academic, and subject-specific words accurately when speaking and writing about a text or topic.

Common Misconceptions

Students may copy a dictionary definition without understanding the word in the text. They may confuse an everyday meaning with a subject-specific meaning. They may recognize a word while reading but misuse it in a sentence.

How to Assess It

Give students one paragraph with two bold words. Ask them to explain each word in their own words and use one in a new sentence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word cards from a science text to sort into everyday, academic, and science-specific groups, then label each with a definition.

  2. Ask students to choose one new word from today’s reading and explain how its meaning helps them understand the text.

  3. Play Vocabulary Match by pairing words with definitions, examples, and nonexamples from the week’s reading.

  4. Have students collect specialized words from a weather report, recipe, or sports article and explain where each word is used.
