What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students learn new everyday, school, and subject words while reading stories and studying class topics. They use those words when speaking and writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

After a shared reading, students explain a new word in child-friendly language and give a correct example. They use the word accurately in conversation or writing.

Common Misconceptions

Students may recognize a word in a book but cannot explain or use it. They may guess from one picture or confuse related words, such as habitat and home.

How to Assess It

For an exit ticket, give students one word from today’s read-aloud. Have them draw its meaning and complete, “A ___ is or does ___.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs picture cards and word cards from a recent text, then have them match, sort, and explain each choice.

  2. Ask, “Which new word best describes the character, object, or event, and why?” Students answer aloud or write one sentence.

  3. Play vocabulary charades using taught words, while classmates name the word and explain the clue that helped them.

  4. Take a classroom walk to label tools and materials, then have students explain when and how each item is used.
