What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students notice and learn useful words while reading stories, informational texts, and subject-area materials. They figure out meanings and use the words in speaking and writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students explain new words using examples, pictures, or simple definitions. They use general, academic, and topic-specific words correctly when speaking and writing about a text or subject.

Common Misconceptions

Students may guess from the first letter instead of using sentence clues or pictures. They may copy a definition but use the word incorrectly. They may also confuse everyday meanings with subject-specific meanings.

How to Assess It

Give students a four-sentence passage containing a taught word, such as habitat. Ask them to underline clues, explain the word, and use it in a new sentence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Sort word cards from a class text into everyday, school-use, and topic-specific groups, then match each word to a picture or object.

  2. Choose one new word from today’s text and write what it means, which clues helped, and a sentence using it.

  3. Play vocabulary bingo by reading definitions, examples, or clues while students cover the matching words on their boards.

  4. Examine a school lunch menu, weather report, or map, then circle specialized words and explain each one to a partner.
