What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students notice and learn useful words while reading stories, informational texts, and subject-area materials. They figure out meanings and use the words in speaking and writing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students explain new words using examples, pictures, or simple definitions. They use general, academic, and topic-specific words correctly when speaking and writing about a text or subject.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess from the first letter instead of using sentence clues or pictures. They may copy a definition but use the word incorrectly. They may also confuse everyday meanings with subject-specific meanings.
How to Assess It
- Give students a four-sentence passage containing a taught word, such as habitat. Ask them to underline clues, explain the word, and use it in a new sentence.
