Students learn and use everyday, academic, and subject-specific words accurately. They select words and phrases that fit the meaning, audience, and situation.

Students choose words that match the exact meaning, audience, and setting. They use taught academic and subject-specific terms correctly when speaking and writing.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose a long or unusual word when a simpler word fits better. They may also treat related words as interchangeable or use specialized terms outside the setting where they make sense.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Revise “The animal moved across the ground” for a science report using precise vocabulary. Underline the strongest word and explain why it fits.

   Give pairs word cards such as walk, creep, sprint, and migrate, then have them sort by meaning and use each in context.

   Ask students to revise “The storm was bad” for a news report, science explanation, and personal narrative, then discuss their word choices.

   Play Vocabulary Taboo with current science and social studies terms, requiring students to define each word without using listed clue words.

4. 04

   Have students examine a weather report, identify specialized terms, and write a two-sentence forecast using three terms accurately.
