What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students determine what new words and phrases mean from reading, class talk, and subject lessons. They choose words that match the topic, audience, and purpose. They use those words accurately when speaking and writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can replace vague words like thing, nice, or went with exact choices. The student uses words such as compare in class tasks and terms such as erosion in subject work. Word choice stays accurate and fits the audience.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose a long word because it sounds smart, even when its meaning is wrong. They may treat synonyms such as look, stare, and glance as interchangeable. Some can recite a definition but misuse the word or use casual wording in a formal response.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Write two descriptions of a dry plant, one text message to a friend and one science note using observe, moisture, and wilted. Underline words chosen for each audience.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have pairs sort cards labeled get, obtain, compare, and erosion into conversation, schoolwork, and science, then explain each choice.

  2. Ask, “Which is more precise, walked, marched, shuffled, or raced, and what clues would make you choose it?”

  3. Play Vocabulary Relay: teams draw a word, give an accurate sentence, then revise it for a new audience to earn a point.

  4. Compare wording in a weather alert and a message to a friend, then rewrite the alert for a younger student.
