What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students notice when their reading sounds wrong or stops making sense. They go back, fix the word or phrasing, and reread to restore meaning and flow.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student notices when a word or phrase does not fit the sentence. The student checks context and word parts, makes a correction, and rereads smoothly without teacher prompting.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may replace a word with a similar-looking word and keep reading even when the sentence no longer makes sense. They may restart without trying a new strategy, or wait for the teacher to supply the word.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short unfamiliar passage to read aloud. Record whether they notice an error, correct it independently, and reread the sentence smoothly.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a short passage and sticky notes to mark spots where they stopped, corrected a word, and reread for meaning.
Ask students to write about one reading mistake they noticed, how they fixed it, and why the correction made sense.
Play Fix-It Reading by giving teams sentences with one incorrect word to find, replace, and reread smoothly.
Have students rehearse a school announcement, circle any misread words, and reread until the message sounds clear and accurate.
