What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students monitor their reading and notice when a word or sentence does not sound right, look right, or make sense. They go back, fix the error, and reread smoothly to confirm meaning.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students notice when a word, phrase, or sentence does not sound right or make sense. They pause, reread, correct the error, and continue with accurate phrasing and understanding.

Common Misconceptions

Students may keep reading after saying a word that does not fit the sentence. Others may reread every sentence, rather than returning only when meaning, accuracy, or phrasing breaks down.

How to Assess It

Give students a short grade-level passage with one likely stumbling point. Ask them to read aloud, notice and repair any error, then explain what helped them correct it.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs short passages with one incorrect word inserted, then have them circle the mismatch, reread, and replace it with a fitting word.

  2. Ask students to explain in writing, “How do you know when you need to stop and reread?” using an example from today's passage.

  3. Play “Fix It Fast” by showing sentences with reading errors and awarding points for accurate corrections and smooth rereading.

  4. Use a cafeteria menu or school notice and ask students to reread any confusing line until they can explain its meaning.
