What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students notice when their reading sounds wrong or stops making sense. They correct the mistake, then reread the word, phrase, or sentence accurately and smoothly.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student notices when a word, phrase, or sentence sounds wrong or does not make sense. The student fixes the error and rereads enough text to restore meaning and smooth phrasing.

Common Misconceptions

Students may keep reading after a mistake, even when the sentence no longer makes sense. They may correct one word but skip rereading the sentence smoothly.

How to Assess It

Give each student a grade-level paragraph and say, "Read aloud. If something sounds wrong or stops making sense, fix it and reread the sentence." Note whether the student notices, corrects, and rereads errors.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a short passage and sticky flags; readers mark each stop, reread the sentence, and explain what they fixed.

  2. Ask students to write: What clue showed your reading was wrong, and what did you change?

  3. Play Fix-It Reading with teacher-made error cards; students spot each misread word, correct it, and reread the full sentence smoothly.

  4. Have students read directions for a paper-folding task, correcting and rereading whenever the result does not match the directions.
