What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students notice when a word or sentence does not sound right or make sense. They stop, try the word again, and reread the phrase to understand it.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student notices a reading mistake without being told. They check the letters and sentence meaning, correct the word, and reread the phrase smoothly.
Common Misconceptions
- Some students keep reading after saying a word that does not fit. Others guess from the picture or first letter without checking the whole word and sentence.
How to Assess It
- Give each student a short unfamiliar passage and say, “Read aloud. If something sounds wrong or does not make sense, fix it.” Note whether the student stops, corrects, and rereads.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips with one word that breaks the meaning; students circle it, choose the correct word card, and reread.
Ask, “How did you know that word was wrong, and what helped you fix it?” after a short read-aloud.
Play Fix-It Reader: intentionally misread a familiar passage, then have students ring a bell, explain the problem, and reread correctly.
Students read picture-supported classroom job cards aloud, checking that each sentence matches the task before carrying it out.
