What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students figure out why a text was made and who it is meant to reach. They use words, pictures, sound, and format to explain their thinking.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify the likely audience and purpose of a story, poster, video, or other text. They point to specific words, images, or design choices as evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse the topic with the purpose, saying “dogs” instead of “to teach about dogs.” They may name the audience as “everyone” or ignore clues in pictures and format.
How to Assess It
- Give students a toy advertisement. Ask: “Who is the audience, what is the purpose, and which two words or images support your answers?”
