What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify why a text was created and who it was made for. They use word choice, tone, images, layout, and sound to explain how the message fits that audience.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a story, advertisement, video, or infographic, students identify its likely purpose and audience. They support each answer with specific clues from words, tone, images, layout, or sound.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name the topic instead of the creator’s purpose. They may say the audience is “everyone” or ignore clues from images, layout, and sound.
How to Assess It
- Show a school recycling poster. Ask students to name its purpose and audience, then cite one language clue and one visual clue.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a cereal box, museum brochure, and game ad; students attach sticky notes naming the audience, purpose, and two design clues.
Compare a school announcement and a student-made flyer, then write: How do the words and visuals target different readers?
Play Clue Sort with word, image, and sound cards; teams match each clue to a likely purpose and audience.
Rewrite a cafeteria reminder for first graders and for parents, changing vocabulary, tone, and visuals for each group.
