What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify why a text was created and who it was made for. They use word choice, tone, images, layout, and sound to explain how the message fits that audience.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a story, advertisement, video, or infographic, students identify its likely purpose and audience. They support each answer with specific clues from words, tone, images, layout, or sound.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name the topic instead of the creator’s purpose. They may say the audience is “everyone” or ignore clues from images, layout, and sound.

How to Assess It

Show a school recycling poster. Ask students to name its purpose and audience, then cite one language clue and one visual clue.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a cereal box, museum brochure, and game ad; students attach sticky notes naming the audience, purpose, and two design clues.

  2. Compare a school announcement and a student-made flyer, then write: How do the words and visuals target different readers?

  3. Play Clue Sort with word, image, and sound cards; teams match each clue to a likely purpose and audience.

  4. Rewrite a cafeteria reminder for first graders and for parents, changing vocabulary, tone, and visuals for each group.
