What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students sort texts by how the author presents ideas, such as narrative, informational, or persuasive writing. They explain how that choice fits the intended readers and supports the author’s purpose and effect.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately label a text as narrative, informational, or persuasive and point to features that support the label. They explain how that choice shapes a reader’s response and helps the author achieve a purpose.

Common Misconceptions

Students may classify a text by its topic instead of how it presents ideas. They may also name the mode correctly but give a vague effect, such as “it makes readers interested.”

How to Assess It

Give students a short text and ask: “Name its mode, cite one clue, and explain why that mode fits the author’s audience and purpose.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups sample texts to sort into narrative, informational, and persuasive folders, then require one written reason for each placement.

  2. Ask students to compare a story and an article about the same animal and explain which audience each version would affect most.

  3. Play Mode Detective with short passages, earning points for naming the mode, citing a clue, and explaining the intended effect.

  4. Examine a school lunch menu, announcement, and advertisement, then discuss why each creator selected a different mode for students and families.
