What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read an informational paragraph and name what it is mostly about. They find details that support that point and describe how those details help explain the topic.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can state the main idea of a single paragraph in their own words. They can point to two supporting details and explain how each one helps readers understand the topic.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose an interesting fact instead of the main idea. They may list any sentence as a supporting detail, even when it does not explain the paragraph's main point.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: “Beavers use branches and mud to build dams. Dams slow moving water and create safe ponds for beavers.” Write the main idea, then explain how one detail supports it.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a main idea card and detail strips, then have them sort which details belong and explain each choice.

  2. Read a short animal paragraph and ask, “What does the author most want us to understand, and which sentences help?”

  3. Play Detail Detective by showing one paragraph and awarding points for matching each supporting detail to the main idea.

  4. Examine a zoo sign, identify its main message and two facts, then discuss why the writer included those facts.
