What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students examine how informational texts organize and display ideas through headings, captions, diagrams, bold words, facts, and details. They judge which choices make the main idea clearer and better supported.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can state the main idea and point to facts or details that clearly support it. They can explain how a heading, caption, diagram, or bold term improves the text.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat an interesting fact as the main idea or choose details that do not support it. They may name headings, captions, or diagrams without explaining how those features help readers understand the information.

How to Assess It

Give students a short article with a heading, caption, and diagram. Ask: “State the main idea, list two supporting facts, and explain which text feature helps most.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups a cut-up article and have them arrange the title, paragraphs, diagram, caption, and facts into a clear page.

  2. Ask students to write which feature in a science article helps readers most, then support their choice with one example.

  3. Play Detail Sort by having teams place fact cards under “supports the main idea” or “does not support the main idea.”

  4. Examine a school lunch nutrition flyer and discuss how facts, labels, and images help families make choices.
