What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify several main ideas in an expository text and match facts and key details to each one. They explain whether features such as headings, sections, and captions present the ideas clearly.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can state the main idea of each section and connect relevant facts and details to it. They can judge whether headings, captions, and layout present the information clearly.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume an expository text has only one main idea. They may treat every interesting fact as support or view headings, captions, and sections as decoration.

How to Assess It

Give students a two-section article. Ask them to state each section’s main idea, list one supporting fact, and explain how one design feature helps the reader.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Cut a short article into headings, main ideas, facts, and captions, then have groups rebuild it and justify their arrangement.

  2. Ask students to write: Which text feature best clarifies a main idea, and what evidence supports your choice?

  3. Play Support or Distract, with teams sorting detail cards under two main ideas and explaining each choice.

  4. Examine a museum brochure and identify how headings, images, captions, and facts help visitors find and understand information.
