What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find useful details in books, articles, diagrams, images, or videos to answer a focused question. They identify where each detail came from, using page numbers, headings, captions, or image labels. They connect information from more than one source.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student selects details that clearly answer the question and identifies where each detail appears. The student compares two sources and explains how their information is alike, different, or connected.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy a sentence that mentions the topic but does not answer the question. They may use only one source, confuse opinions with facts, or name a book without identifying the useful page, heading, or image.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short paragraph and labeled diagram about frogs. Ask, "What helps frogs live in water? Use one detail from each source and name where each detail appears."

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs two animal books and photo cards, then have them sort useful facts by source and record the page or image.
Ask, "How do these two sources help us understand the topic better together?" Students answer with details from both sources.
Play Evidence Match by having students pair question cards with fact cards, then name the source feature where each fact was found.
Compare a school lunch menu, nutrition label, and cafeteria poster to answer, "How can students choose a balanced lunch?"
