What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students work with partners and small groups to complete a shared task. They listen, take turns, contribute ideas, follow a plan, and help solve problems.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student shares materials, listens, takes turns, and completes an agreed role. The student adds useful ideas, responds respectfully, and helps the group finish its task.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think working together means sitting near a partner or letting one person do the work. They may interrupt, ignore assigned roles, or change the group plan without asking.
How to Assess It
- Give pairs five minutes to sort eight story events in order. Ask each student to explain one choice and name how their partner helped.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups paper strips and tape to build the tallest tower, with each student assigned a job.
Ask partners to discuss, “What makes a helpful teammate?” then write two rules they agree to follow.
Play a picture-sort relay where each teammate places one card and explains the choice before the next turn.
Have teams plan a class library display, choosing a theme, assigning jobs, and presenting their plan to the class.
