What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students help make simple group rules, choose a clear goal, and decide who will do each job. They follow agreed steps, check progress, and help the group stay focused.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can help the group choose a clear outcome, agree on rules, assign roles, and list work steps. During the task, the student listens, follows the plan, checks progress, and suggests changes when the group gets stuck.

Common Misconceptions

Some students think teamwork means dividing tasks and working alone, or letting one person make every decision. They may choose vague goals, skip planned steps, or treat group rules as only the teacher's job.

How to Assess It

Give each group a six-piece puzzle and five minutes to complete it. Ask each student to name the group's goal, one agreed rule, and one step that helped the group finish.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give teams 20 craft sticks and tape to build a bridge after choosing a goal, three rules, roles, and work steps.

  2. Ask students to write one rule that helps a group finish, then discuss which three rules the class should adopt.

  3. Play a role-card challenge where groups sort picture cards while a facilitator checks turns, time, and progress toward the goal.

  4. Plan a classroom supply drive, with students setting a collection goal, assigning jobs, and deciding how to track donations.
