What Students Need to Do

Students learn the meanings of new everyday, school, and subject words from reading, lessons, and conversations. They use those words accurately when speaking and writing in different situations.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students explain taught words in their own language and connect them to examples. They use general, school, and subject words correctly during conversations and in writing.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use a new word in a sentence without understanding its meaning. They may confuse school words, such as compare, with subject words, such as habitat. They may also choose a familiar word when a more exact word fits.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Define enormous, compare, and habitat, then use two of the words correctly in separate sentences.

   Give pairs word cards and picture cards to match, then sort the pairs into everyday, school, and subject groups.

   Ask students to write how the words look, observe, and examine are alike and when each word fits best.

3. 03

   Play Vocabulary Four Corners by posting four definitions and having students move to the definition matching each called word.

4. 04

   Examine a weather report and list everyday words, school words, and weather terms, then use three in a spoken forecast.
