What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students notice specific choices in diction, syntax, structure, imagery, and point of view. They explain how those choices shape their reactions and reveal the author’s purpose or perspective. They judge how well each choice works.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can mark a passage, name a precise craft move, and trace how it creates tension, sympathy, doubt, or another response. The student can explain the likely purpose and evaluate whether the move succeeds, using quoted evidence.

Common Misconceptions

Students often label a technique without explaining its effect. They may treat a personal reaction as proof without quoting the text. They also may confuse the narrator’s perspective with the author’s perspective.

How to Assess It

Use a 150-word passage from today’s reading. Ask: “Name one craft choice, quote it, explain the response it triggers, and judge whether it serves the author’s purpose.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups printed passages and colored tabs to label diction, syntax, structure, and point of view, then connect each tab to a response.

  2. Discuss which sentence most changed your view of the speaker, then write two lines explaining the craft choice that caused the shift.

  3. Play Craft Match: students pair technique cards with effect cards, then defend each match using a quoted line from the text.

  4. Compare two campaign ads, identifying how image captions, repetition, and sentence length shape trust, urgency, or skepticism.
