What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students pinpoint deliberate word choices, explain their effects on readers, and connect those effects to the writer’s purpose. They also choose and revise words in their own writing for a specific audience.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can select specific words from a passage and explain how their connotations shape tone and audience response. The student can revise wording for a target audience and justify each change.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often name a tone without linking it to exact words. They may treat synonyms as interchangeable or claim a choice is effective without discussing audience and purpose.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Rewrite “Our school must reduce waste” for skeptical seniors. Underline two deliberate word choices and explain how each helps persuade that audience.

Compare two headlines about the same event, then write which word choices influence readers more and explain why.
Play diction swap by replacing key words in a paragraph, scoring each revision for fit with its assigned audience and purpose.
Examine a college email or job posting, then identify wording meant to attract applicants and revise it for a different audience.
