What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students notice choices an author makes, such as repetition, sound words, punctuation, and illustration details. They explain how one choice made them feel, think, predict, decide, or ask a question.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students point to an exact word, phrase, punctuation mark, or illustration detail. They explain how it shaped a feeling, thought, prediction, decision, or question. They can say whether the choice worked and why.

Common Misconceptions

Students may retell what happened instead of naming an author’s choice. They may name a feeling without pointing to the word, punctuation, or picture that caused it. They may also confuse a character’s action with the author’s craft.

How to Assess It

Show a page with repetition and expressive punctuation. Ask students to complete: "The author used ___, which made me think or feel ___ because ___."

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sticky notes to label repeated words, sound words, punctuation, and illustration clues on a shared picture-book page.

  2. Ask, "Which author choice changed your feeling or prediction, and what exact word or picture caused it?"

  3. Play Craft Detective: students draw a card naming repetition, sound words, or punctuation, then find and explain an example.

  4. Compare two school posters and discuss which words, punctuation, and pictures would better persuade students to wash their hands.
