What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use matching grammatical patterns across paragraphs or sections, especially in headings, topic sentences, and repeated claims. They revise patterns so related ideas feel balanced and clearly connected.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can spot mismatched patterns among headings, topic sentences, or repeated claims. They revise those parts into matching forms while keeping each idea clear and logically related.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think parallel structure applies only to items in a sentence-level list. They may repeat words without matching grammatical forms, or match forms for ideas that are not logically equal.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Revise three body paragraph topic sentences so they use the same grammatical pattern. Underline that pattern and explain how it connects the ideas.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups printed topic sentences from an essay, then have them arrange and revise the sentences into a clear parallel sequence.

  2. Ask students to write three parallel topic sentences supporting the claim, School schedules should change, then explain why the ideas belong together.

  3. Run a revision relay where teams correct mismatched headings and topic sentences, earning one point for form and one for logical fit.

  4. Collect headings from a news site or company webpage, then revise them so related sections follow a consistent grammatical pattern.
