What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify matching grammatical patterns in lists, comparisons, and paired ideas. They revise mismatched words, phrases, or clauses so related ideas have the same form.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can spot a break in a series or comparison and explain why it sounds uneven. They can revise it with matching words, phrases, or clauses while keeping the original meaning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often mix forms, as in “running, to swim, and biking.” They may match wording without checking whether the ideas have equal roles. Some revise the grammar but accidentally change the meaning.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Revise “Maya enjoys reading novels, to write poems, and debating films.” Underline the matching forms and name the pattern.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips labeled noun, gerund, infinitive, and clause, then have them build and repair three-item lists.
Ask students to compare two campaign slogans, then write which sounds more balanced and identify the repeated grammatical form.
Run a parallelism relay where teams revise one mismatched sentence, pass the marker, and score only when every item matches.
Have students edit a school club flyer so its goals, duties, and benefits use matching grammatical patterns.
