What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students shape matching ideas with matching grammatical patterns across several paragraphs or sections. They revise headings, topic sentences, and supporting points so related ideas feel balanced and clearly connected.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can identify where corresponding ideas use uneven grammatical patterns. The student can revise headings, topic sentences, and supporting points into balanced forms while preserving meaning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may correct parallelism within lists but miss mismatched patterns across paragraphs. They may repeat exact wording without matching grammatical form. They may also force unrelated ideas into matching structures.
How to Assess It
- Give students two short paragraphs with mismatched topic sentences and supporting points. Ask them to revise both paragraphs for parallel structure and underline each change.

Ways to Teach It
Arrange color-coded sentence strips from two paragraphs, then revise mismatched verbs or phrases so corresponding ideas use parallel forms.
Write two linked paragraphs answering, “What should schools preserve, and what should they change?” Use matching topic sentences and supporting points.
Run an editing relay where teams locate and repair nonparallel headings, topic sentences, and repeated claim patterns in a short article.
Examine a college mission statement or political speech, marking repeated structures and explaining how they connect ideas across sections.
