What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students recognize when related ideas in a paragraph use matching grammatical forms. They create and revise sentences so lists, comparisons, and paired ideas follow a consistent pattern.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students identify matching and mismatched grammatical patterns within a paragraph. They revise lists, comparisons, and paired ideas so each part uses the same form and supports the paragraph’s meaning.

Common Misconceptions

Students may mix verb forms, such as “planning, drafted, and to revise,” in one series. They may also repeat words without creating a consistent grammatical pattern.

How to Assess It

Give students a short paragraph with two faulty series. Ask them to underline each series, revise it for parallel structure, and explain one change.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence strips with mixed verb forms, then have them rearrange or rewrite the strips into parallel lists.

  2. Ask students to write a paragraph beginning, “A strong teammate should,” and include three parallel actions.

  3. Play Parallel or Not by projecting sentences while teams hold up cards and correct every mismatch they find.

  4. Have students examine a job posting, then revise three duty statements so each begins with a matching action verb.
